Trying to figure out a good domain name for your website can be a tricky process. However, having the correct domain name is one of the most important things you can do for your website and it is also one of the things that can make or break your site. With a proper domain name, you are able to not only achieve that name recognition that sites like Amazon and Google have, but you’ll also be able to start ranking better in the search engines for particular keywords. What I have compiled is a check list of things to keep in mind when creating a domain name:

Determine the most important keyword you want to rank for in the search engines so that when you pick one, it can have that keyword in it. If you are a plumber in Naples, it couldn’t hurt to try and rank for the keyword Naples Florida Plumbing. So, you may try and get the domain name NaplesFloridaPlumbing.com.

Is it copyrighted? If you want to try and create a website about a certain TV show, chances are, it might become a legal issue if you try and use that TV show in your domain name. You don’t want to spend a ton of money on legal ramifications just because the domain name was cool. Try and figure out another way to make it work. That’s important.

Be careful with your hyphens. They’re not a horrible thing; however, if you have them, trying to remember the site becomes a bit harder. What’s easier to remember? PoliticalChat.com or Political-Chat.com. If you tell people, you have to remember to include the hyphen when telling them so that they can type that in when searching for the site. That risks sending people to a potential competitor.

Don’t make them too long. The longer the domain name, the more likely it will be forgotten. As much as I said that you want to put a keyword in the domain name, you don’t want to run the risk of keyword stuffing the domain name because that will just peeve the search engines and get you deindexed or never indexed in the first place. One keyword…Short domains.

Get the .com. A .com domain name is the most easily remembered one out there right now. You could get a .org or a .net, but those are less known. Even more less known is .info. Keep it simple…Get a .com.

If you follow these five tips, you are going to be able to get a proper domain name for your site. However, do some research and really find the perfect domain name for your website. Once you have, contact us and we’ll be able to get a site up and running on it.

The main site design is almost done, just a few little things to fix up. One of the tweaks is that scroll box you see with the pictures of past site designs, I want that to automatically scroll every 4 or 5 seconds. Other than that scroll box and a few places on the site with dead links, we are almost ready to start using it on all of our little niche specific sites. By niche specific I mean sites like Naples SEO and this site.
