To be very honest, I’m burned out with national SEO terms. Not only is it extremely hard to take national terms, the competition is with sites like wikipedia and it takes months to get #1 for something, unlike local SEO which can usually be done much faster. Just recently I lost #1 for the search term “petition” to wikipedia, such a bad feeling and honestly I’m not sure that I will try and win the #1 spot back. Most people are so used to seeing wikipedia in the search results they pay it no mind. Even if we do lose traffic to the wiki petition page, wikipedia isn’t a competing site so it really doesn’t matter, when they start hosting online petitions then I’ll worry about it.

Back on topic, I’m really excited to be in the local SEO market now, no more competing against the YouTubes and Wikipedias, the PR6, PR7, or higher behemoths. nope, now it’s mainly the mom and pop stores trying to rank for stuff like “naples lawn care” or “fort myers plumbing”, this is going to be like a much needed vacation.

I’ll post more soon, time for bed right now though.

I noticed a lot of people and companies are still submitting their sites to web directories and I wonder if it’s worth the trouble and money? Let’s be honest, the vast majority of web directories are nothing more than organized link farms, most directories will accept any site that’s submitted simply to build their database.

Recently Google actually removed the section of their webmaster guidelines that said to submit to web directories, yes, they removed it. In other words, they no longer recommend that as a good SEO option.

That’s not to say all directories are bad, getting into DMOZ is still a great idea in my opinion. Also getting into any niche directory is still a good idea. It’s the general web directories that I’d stay away from, especially the ones that charge money and even worse the ones who let you bid on your directory positioning. I’ve seen directory after directory get his with penalties because of selling links or positions.

What about the Yahoo Directory? I’ve never personally submitted one of my sites there because in my opinion $300 can be used better elsewhere. You can get lots of other nice stuff for your site for $300. There was once a guy on DP that knew an exploit to get into the Yahoo Directory at will, he was selling submissions for $60 or something, he had literally 100’s of orders in the first day, dunno how that went. I didn’t buy one because I’m sure Yahoo discovered what was going on and patched the exploit and removed all the sites that guy submitted.

I still think niche directories are a good idea. Say you have a site about web design, go submit it to web design related directories. Should you pay? Meh, I don’t know, I probably wouldn’t in most cases but you have to make up your own mind about such things.

I was sort of hoping that they didn’t even know or care that they had #1 for Naples Web Design, apparently they did know and do care. My old boss just pointed out to me that they not only have #1 again but they adjusted their page title. I don’t remember what the title was before but it had all kinds of other babbling in the title, now it’s just “naples web design”. Fine.

Part of me wants to let them have it because to be honest, while the traffic is decent, I’ve got maybe 1 or 2 leads from this site? The other part of me is raged because not only did I lose #1, now I have to start working on it again to get my #1 back.

How long have you guys been around? I could check whois but I’m lazy, I suspect you have a semi-aged domain, yes? 5 years? More? If this damn domain wasn’t so new my worries would probably be natta. Whatever, I’ll see you all at #2 shortly! Why don’t you guys outsource SEO to me? Get a hold of me, I’m sure we can work something out

EDIT: I also changed my page title back to a straight “naples web design”, sorry Ryan.

EDIT2: Here are the stats for this domain in case anyone is curious. I know, I know, it’s not all from web search, it’s getting a ton of traffic from Google Images but I can’t find out what the search term is.

Recently I noticed that another local company started to copy one of my ideas for ranking in Google.

Recently I noticed that another local company started to copy one of my ideas for ranking in Google. Now usually this wouldn’t really bother me all that much but because it’s someone local, it does bother me. I don’t know what being local has to do with it, but it somehow changes things.

So at first I was pretty mad and considered going on a rampage like I did with the “naples seo” search term. If you search for “naples seo” you will see the search results have been pretty much devastated by various sites that I control. At one time it was a peaceful land where all “SEOers” in Naples happily shared the space with each other. Today, not so much. This change hasn’t gone un-noticed either, some people have been talking about me and what I do, they have also sent me some messages via awstats referrers.

So anyway, after sitting back and thinking I started to relax. While my first reaction was to pollute the search results for “naples web design” like I did the results for “naples SEO”, I realized doing so would take time and energy away from my #1 goal of hitting the first result for Naples Web Design in Google. Which by the way, I’m at #2 now. I’d like to hit that #1 before the end of the month, I’m actually surprised it’s taken this long.

This isn’t a green light to start copying my methods either. If you push it too far I will get angry and take it out on the offending company or companies. So please, copy off me with care. Doing it here and there is fine, just let’s not get too crazy with it, OK?
