The Power of Long Tail Keywords
June 6 2009
Everyone wants to rank for that single keyword that will send a thousand people a day to their site. They hope for the keyword that will take them from nobody to somebody on the web. However, the unfortunate truth is that it is really difficult to try and get ranked for these tremendously competitive keywords. People spend thousands of dollars trying to rank for these keywords and if you have the money to do that, you’re more than welcome. However, if you’re like other people and can’t afford to spend that much money on links, there is little you can do to get those keywords.
That doesn’t mean that your site is never going to become successful. The type of keywords that people don’t typically try and rank for are the long tail keywords. These are, as the name suggests, much longer keywords that are not searched for very often. So, one keyword may only send ten or fifteen people to your site a day instead of those thousand people. They may only send one or two people a day. However, the trick about these keywords is they are much easier to rank for in the search engines instead of those much longer keywords.
The way to think about it is like this. Let’s say you are given $1000 to try and rank for that one competitive keyword. You know that if you rank for it, you will be able to get at least a thousand people to your site a day, if not more. Or, you are given $1000 to try and rank for as many keywords as you want with the hope of trying to rank for numerous numbers of keywords. You could try and rank for that one keyword, but it is dangerous for a few reasons.
First and foremost, what happens if you lose that ranking? You suddenly are missing out on a ton of traffic. If you spent the $1000 on a bunch of different keywords that were all sending less traffic to your site, but the same amount collectively, if you lose one or two of those keyword rankings, you won’t have to worry about your traffic suddenly dying.
There are a few rules when dealing with any sort of business. If you put all your eggs into a single basket, you’re going to be up the creek if that fails you. If you have your eggs in numerous baskets, if one basket fails, you’ve still got a ton of other options. This is the power of long tail keywords. You get to rank for numerous different keywords that will send traffic. While ranking for these keywords, you can start trying to push for that amazing keyword. However, the long tail keywords, when added together, can send a ton of traffic.
